Dastarkhwan

The Dastarkhwan opens every day. Food is cooked in large pots on site, mats are laid on the street, and anyone who arrives is fed — no registration, no questions, no means test.

Most of those who come are day labourers, elderly men without family nearby, and families whose income did not stretch to the end of the month. Many eat here several times a week.

It is the programme the foundation is best known for, and the one that has run longest without interruption.
